How to get access to SAPOS NTRIP service in Germany
If you are located in Germany and need RTK corrections to take measurements with centimeter accuracy, the easiest way to go is to get access to Germany’s national RTK network called SAPOS.
SAPOS service consolidates data from several operators. This service is free in most federal states, while some states require a fee. You can check which areas offer free or paid access here: National RTK network in Germany. Prices and procedure of registration may vary slightly by federal state.
This tutorial explains how to register to SAPOS NTRIP service and receive your credentials. The steps below describe the process for Baden-Württemberg, but the procedure is similar nationwide.
Required hardware:
- a PC or a smartphone with internet access
How to register to SAPOS correction service?
- Find the local operator of SAPOS service in your federal state. In this tutorial, we’re registering from Baden-Württemberg, so we use the LGL local operator. For other federal states, refer to the full list of operators under National RTK network in Germany.
- To register to the service, visit the registration page for your region. For Baden-Württemberg: SAPOS Baden-Württemberg Registration.
- Fill out the registration form: provide your name, address, contact name, phone number, e-mail address, industrial sector, customer status, the number of SAPOS accounts you need. Accept the terms of use and click Senden.
- The registration confirmation can take up to one week after submitting the form and is only available during the business hours.
Note: if you do not receive a response within one week, please contact the office by phone or email to check whether the service have received your request.
- Once the confirmation is processed, you’ll receive an confirmation email similar to below. Since SAPOS offers different types of service with different features and levels of accuracy, the email will contain credentials to connect to:
- HEPS: High-precision real-time positioning service, position accuracy: 1 cm – 2 cm
- GPPS: Geodetic post-processing positioning service, position accuracy up to < 1 cm
- EPS: Real-time positioning service, position accuracy: 0.3 m – 0.8 m
For centimeter accuracy in real time, you will need to use NTRIP credentials for SAPOS HEPS service:
- SAPOS portal username and password
- NTRIP server address, port, and mountpoints
- You can start using the service immediately after receiving the credentials, even before payment is processed (for German residents).
Note for customers from abroad: Your invoice must be paid in advance and you will only receive your access data after receipt of payment.
- SAPOS provides VRS (Virtual Reference Stations), which simulate a base station close to your rover. To use this feature properly, your RTK kit must send NMEA GGA data to the base station. To do that, enable sending NMEA GGA to Base station. In this tutorial, we show how to do this using the GNSS Master app. If you are using another app, look for this feature in it.
- After some more days (for us it took around 3 weeks) you will receive the invoice via email or postal letter. In our case we received invoice via postal letter.
