XBee antenna installation guide says about LR kit range: “10km in rural environment with perfect installation. And up to 14km if you use a high gain antenna.” What kind of antenna is delivered with this kit, is it high gain (db?)? Any better choices for antenna?
After testing several models, we selected the antenna included in our kit. This antenna is an omnidirectional antenna that reaches 3dBi. In our tests we reached around 11Km in urban areas and 2.5Km in urban areas. Note that this distance can only be reached with very good installation. You can read more about this in our hookup guides.
The next step to increase the range would be:
– Use a high gain base station antenna like Barracuda series from Taoglas: https://www.taoglas.com/product/barracuda-omb-868-b12f21/
– Use a directive patch antenna in the rover, always pointing towards the base.
Be careful because many antennas claim to have more dBs but in practice this is in a very specific direction and not very omnidirectional.
Alternatively the Digi XBee-PRO® SX Module has better range than the Digi XBee® SX Module used in the LR kit: https://www.digi.com/products/embedded-systems/rf-modules/sub-1-ghz-modules/xbee-sx#specifications but it draws a bit more power.
Stay tuned as we are planning to add compatibility to this radio this year.
Yeah the XBee 750mA 3.3V VCC is way under-powered. I assume you mean it will be upgraded in V2?
Yes, to add support for the XBee PRO we will release a new board.
