4G NTRIP client Firmware Update

Q&A forumCategory: Questions4G NTRIP client Firmware Update
Manuel Grecher asked 3 months ago

How can I update the firmware of the 4G NTRIP client? At the moment I have the FW V1.2-20200625 which is quiet unstable in fact that the correction data from APOS (Austrian correction service) don’t reach the simpleRTK2B V3. (NMEA output on UART2 is on and GGA message on UART2 is also on for VRS and sometime I also get an RTK fix)
At the hookup site it said: “Select the “m2mapz.bin” file from your computer” but I can’t find such a file and I can’t download the file from the hookup site? Any idea where I can get the file?

Ardusimple Staff replied 3 months ago

Hi Manuel,
FW 1.2 actually has quite good feedback so far about stability of the connection, also from customers in Austria, I would do a few checks:

1. Some servers kick out users if GGA is not received after 30 seconds. Make sure GGA is sent at 115’200bps. If you are using the receiver at 10Hz, check that you are not sending too much messages over UART2 and is being overflowed and messages don’t make it to the server.

2. Operator. does your sim card operator have good signal in your area?

3. The kit is coming with mobile phone antennas, it’s important to use both, separate them as much as possible from each other, and don’t glue them to metal elements, only to plastic or wood. Soon we will launch an external antenna kit for extra coverage.

4. Power. Make sure your power source is able to provide 2A peaks. If you are in areas of little coverage, the 4G NTRIP Client will need a lot of current. If your power supply can not provide it, it will just reset.

Lastly if you want to update the firmware (although I don’t think it will improve your connectivity issue) you can find it in the hookup guide: https://www.ardusimple.com/4g-ntrip-client-hookup-guide/#overview
Make sure UART connected to the XBee is disabled before performing the upgrade process.

Hi,
Thank you for your prompt reply.
1. GGA is transmitted every second via UART2. So I use the receiver with 1Hz. I turned off all other messages via UART2. I’ll call APOS once next week. Maybe they can tell me something about the connection issues.
2. The reception of my provider should not be a problem after I have installed the SIM card in my mobile phone for test purposes and received 4G.
3. Both antennas are mounted and hang on the 4G receiver as described (no metal surfaces nearby). Is there a possibility with Telit AT to determine the reception status (2G, 3G or 4G)?
4. I determined the power consumption with a USB tester and at the moment I did not get above 0.6A (even with a successful connection to the correction service). Power consumption should not be a problem via the power connection on my laptop (2.1 A).
The firmware update is already well described but, as I said, I can nowhere find the file “m2mapz.bin” which is required after clicking on the “Download Appzone binary” button for the firmware update. Can you send me this file or create a link on the hookup guide website?
Here is the Telit AT protocol where I established a connection to APOS. I pressed the xbee reset button after every unsuccessful connection. Strangely enough, a connection could be established after the third time. Is there anything abnormal about the log?

My progress or findings since yesterday:
1) I haven’t changed the settings on the receiver (F9P) and instead of the 4G Ntrip client I installed a xbee bluetooth module. Then the corresponding sim from the 4G Ntrip client is transferred to a mobile phone and a successful connection to the APOS correction service (including RTK fix) is established via the lefebure app (including exact the same parameters for the mounting point).
The cause cannot be due to the settings on the part of the F9P receiver or the mounting point (APOS). So I activated the debug mode for Telit AT controller and found the following error message.

So I tried to find out if there was a network connection.
network analyzer
In total I’ve tried 3 different sim cards. Any idea what’s wrong here? In any case, there must be a connection problem with my Internet provider.

Ardusimple Staff replied 3 months ago

Hi Manuel,
thanks for the detailed description.
5. What are the APN settings of your sim provider? Mobile phones have a long database of apns, but of 4G NTRIP Client needs exactly the right settings.
6. We added compatibility to a different type of sim cards starting firmware 1.4. You can download the last version from the hookup guide, scroll to the bottom: https://www.ardusimple.com/4g-ntrip-client-hookup-guide/#overview From 1.2 to 1.3 we implemented a new security key, you will have to send us a picture of your 4G NTRIP Client to info@ardusimple.com so we can send you your new security key, otherwise the software will not boot.

m.g. answered 3 months ago

Hi
5. The APN settings for my sim provider are a1.net (Link). I checked the apn settings by inserting the sim card into my tablet and looking at the network settings showing me a1.net must be the apn.
6. I will send you a picture in a few minutes.

m.g. answered 3 months ago

Thanks for the quick help. Now one of my sim cards (yesss) works but the provider A1 still doesn’t work although I change the apn configuration?
There is still the message and that with two SIM cards from A1 (a new and an old one):
$GPTXT,SM_GIP: NOK, IP NOT RECEIVED*63
any ideas why I do not get an ip from the provider?

m.g. answered 3 months ago

After a few hours I found the problem !!!
For me, the following step worked. In the network analyzer (you have to call it up after a reset) I changed the network mode to 29 or 30. Both modes worked fine for me. Since then I have been given an IP address and can reach the correction service.

Can you explain to me why my sim only works in network mode 29 and 30 and which network mode is the best for getting a 4G connection?
Thank you for the great support over the weekend!!!

Ardusimple Staff replied 3 months ago

Dear Manuel,
This is good news. If you could explain what do you mean by network analyzer and modes 29 and 30 we can try to understand your situation.

m.grecher replied 3 months ago

The network analyzer is a button in the AT Terminal between the “Send File” button and the “Download Appzone binary” button

Ardusimple Staff replied 3 months ago

Note that with these changes your coverage will be worse as you are disabling some access technologies.
Our recommendation is to stay in mode 25, update to FW 1.51 and if still you cannot connect enable enterprise SIM mode with $$$AS+L=1 command.

m.g. replied 3 months ago

I already updated to FW 1.51 and in mode 25 I don’t get an ip adresse from my provider. I will try out the enterprise Sim mode tomorrow.
To dissable the enterprise mode $$$AS+L=0 will be the command? What does the enterprise mode?
Do you know what are the exact differences between the different network modes?

Ardusimple Staff replied 3 months ago

Yes you can disable that mode with $$$AS+L=0
Some sim cards open a data channel during network registration and don’t allow second data channels. With this mode you use the registration data channel for connection to internet. In a later version we might add an automatic detection for this but right now it’s only available manually. Hope this resolves your situation, otherwise we will need another terminal log.
